University Jazz Ensemble in Concert with Guest Erica von Kleist
Performance Music at The University of Scranton presents Erica von Kleist, saxophonist and flautist, in concert with The University of Scranton Jazz Band on Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
A rising young star in the jazz world, von Kleist was named one of 2012’s top flautists. She is one of the most in-demand musicians in the New York City jazz scene, and has performed and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Chris Potter, Sean Jones, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and the Grammy Award-winning Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. Von Kleist is a proven and gifted composer as well, writing for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Julliard School and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra.
With two albums of her own already under her belt, von Kleist has also been featured on many other albums, including the original Broadway cast recording of “The Addams Family.” She was a member of the orchestra for the play, performing with cast members Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth.
When she’s not performing or composing, von Kleist is committed to educating others. She has conducted clinics through organizations such as Jazz at Lincoln Center and New York Pops, and has traveled to schools throughout the United States, Japan and Cuba. In 2011 von Kleist released a book entitled “A Cool Approach to Jazz Theory” that teaches developing young musicians how to understand harmony.
Von Kleist will be offering a workshop on the use of her approach to teaching jazz theory and improvisation on the morning of April 20. Regional jazz educators, private instrumental teachers and music education students are welcome to attend this workshop free of charge.
