Film Screening - Balancing the Scales
Monday, 24 April, 2017
Director and Attorney, Sharon Rowen, will be on campus for a screening and a disucssion of her recently released film, Balancing the Scales. Over the past two decades, beginning in 1994, Ms. Rowen interviewed over 40 American women lawyers and judges for her feature documentary, Balancing the Scales. This insightful documentary features pioneers and leaders such as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, civil rights advocate Gloria Allred and many others. These women represent five generations of women lawyers, from some of the first lawyers to be admitted to practice to young women just starting their career.
Ms. Rowen explores the history of women lawyers -- what has changed in the last 50 years and what challenges remain. She delves into topics such as implicit bias and how to recognize it, work/life balance and why it is impossible to achieve, what it takes to become a partner in today's firms, and why women still are not breaking the glass ceiling. It takes a close look at how our culture still defines caregiving as women's work, and how gender equality in the workplace will only be achieved when both career and caregiving become equally important to all of us, men and women alike.
