In the 20th century Russia, whether under tsars, commissars or presidents, has had tumultuous relations with most of its European and Asian neighbors over geopolitical, economic and ideological issues. Former allies became the bitterest of enemies while hated enemies became important allies. This pattern continues up to the present day, as is evident in the Russian seizure of the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine. The course will examine Russian relations with six countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Poland and Ukraine. Each of these relationships played a crucial role in creating the modern world.
