CTLE Workshop - Understanding College Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Given recent advances in research into Autism and in providing effective treatments, more and more ASD students are now attending college creating both challenges and opportunities for college instructors.

This presentation will begin by developing an understanding of Autism from the inside as explained by college students with ASD. Then as a group we will consider the specific strengths and weaknesses, the specific advantages and liabilities that ASD students bring to the college classroom.

From this foundation we will review and examine the current effective instructional strategies for teaching ASD at the college level and brainstorm on techniques suitable and appropriate for our setting.

John R. Harvey, Ph.D. is a consulting psychologist with a special interest in working with children, adolescents and adults who have developmental and acquired challenges of learning, memory and attention. After obtaining his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Harvey served for many years as Director of Psychology at Allied Services in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Scranton. In addition to his clinical work he has served as a certified trainer for the well-known psycho-educational tests, the Woodcock-Johnson III and IV.
