From Music Score to Life on Stage with Gene Terruso

Tuesday, 04 April, 2023

Over the last few decades, the evolution of musical theatre  has been greatly impacted by forms such as the jukebox musical and the rock opera. Many of these shows use a plotline based on an artist’s or group’s life and career.  Still others make use of the artist’s music catalogue to develop a newly created narrative. The Slattery Center's presentation will discuss this history of styles and storylines, look at one artist’s work in creating such shows, and demonstrate how the classic folk-rock opera “Babbcombe Lee,” is making use of such approaches to dramatization as it is adapted for modern audiences.

Gene Terruso's professional credits include work in film and TV, on and off-Broadway, and in major theatres here in the U.S. and abroad. He served as artistic director for NYC's historic Provincetown Playhouse, Chicago's SummerNITE Theatre and the Atlantic Theatre Festival. He was Director of the School of Theatre at Philadelphia's University of the Arts and President of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (NYC and Hollywood). He is a two-time Fulbright Awardee and recipient of the Frank O'Hara Award for outstanding career achievement by a University of Scranton alumnus.
