Scranton Brass Seminar

Other Dates For This Event:

Tuesday, 23 June, 2015

The Scranton Brass Seminar is an intensive non-curricular one week summer seminar focusing on various elements of brass playing. Application for enrollment is open to senior high school, college and university, and adult amateur and professional brass players, as well as to instrumental music teachers.

This year's Scranton Brass Seminar will begin on Monday, June 22 and continue through Friday, June 26th, and take place each day from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Activities include masterclasses, clinics, special topics presentations, solo & improvisation coaching, small brass ensemble playing, and brass orchestra, as well as a final performance. Presenters/clinicians include experts in a variety of areas of brass playing, including not only nationally renowned brass players/teachers, but also conductors, accompanists, psychologists, and physicians with special expertise in working with musicians.

This year's clinicians will include:

Mark Gould (trumpeter, faculty, The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music; retired principal trumpet, Metropolitan Opera)

Vince Gardner (trombonist, tubaist, composer and arranger; Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra)

Jennifer Krupa (trombonist, composer and arranger; U.S. Navy Commodores & The Diva Jazz Orchestra)

Joseph Boga (trumpeter, composer and arranger; New York Trumpet Ensemble & Professor Cunningham and His Old School)

More clinicians will be announced soon and you can check for updates on our website:

Music educators - whether or not they are advanced level brass players - are also welcome and invited to enroll, in service of meeting their needs for continuing education and professional development in the areas of brass instruction and performance.

Participants in each year’s seminar are afforded special opportunities throughout the following academic year to observe rehearsals and participate in masterclasses by world class brass players who visit the university as guest artists with the Performance Music program here. (During the last two academic years, students from the brass seminars were invited to observe open rehearsals and attend masterclasses and clinics by The New York Trumpet Ensemble who were serving as artists-in-residence at the university, a "Breathing Gym Live!" event with Sam Pilafian, a masterclass with Caleb Hudson, trombone clinics with Wycliffe Gordon, improvisation clinics with Joseph Boga, and more.)

Applicants who are student musicians who are majoring in music education or music at another college or university, who are members or alumni of The University of Scranton Bands, or are high school students who have successfully participated in a PMEA Festival at the district level or higher, will require no audition for enrollment. Students who do not meet those guidelines will need to have their private studio teacher or band director contact Cheryl Boga at (570) 941-7624 to discuss their suitability for enrollment and may be asked to play an informal audition.

Please contact us at music@scranton.edu to receive a mailed and/or electronic brochure and application materials for June 2015. Brochures for June 2015 will be available on April 15, 2015, and registration opens on April 20. No more than 20 participants will be accepted, and admissions is on a rolling basis.

PLEASE NOTE: High school students may only attend as commuters, as no supervised room and board options are offered as part of the seminar for those under college age.
