Poverty Simulation

Friday, 06 November, 2015

The Poverty Simulation is an exercise designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive month to month.  It is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low- income people.

88 participants will assume the roles of up to 26 different families facing poverty.  Some members of the families are newly unemployed, some are homeless, some may be senior citizens receiving disability and raising their grandchildren.  The task of the “families” is to provide basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute weeks. The simulation lasts approximately two and one-half hours. It includes an introduction and briefing, the actual simulation exercise and a debriefing period.

This program is sponsored by the Center for Service and Social Justice, the Education for Justice Committee and the Jesuit Center.
