ALL FIRST YEAR STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND THEIR FIRST SERVICE
OPPORTUNITY AT SCRANTON!
The Center for Student Engagement is once again, in collaboration with the Office of Campus Ministries/Center for Service and Social Justice, Office of Community Relations, the Jesuit Center, and community partners, hosting a “Back to School Bonanza” for the children of Scranton and Lackawanna County on Sunday August 20th from 2-4pm at the Marketplace at Steamtown. This free carnival offers family oriented activities, educational games and prizes all in an effort to help get students excited to return to school and assist parents with off-setting the cost of supplying materials for their children to start the academic year. University first-year students will be working all of the games, the food and assisting with the families that day- a great way for our newest students to start off their Scranton career, doing service!
Where do you come in? Students, faculty and staff volunteers are needed between 1-4:30 p.m., and the time can be broken into different shifts to help with activities (2-4pm), with the set-up (12-2 pm) and break-down (3:00-4:30pm). In addition, we are still looking for faculty and staff who might want to offer a special activity table geared for elementary/middle school age children. Please note, first year students are encouraged to sign up for the 2-4 pm shift so that they can work with other first year students. Staff, faculty and clubs are encouraged to sign up for set up or clean up, other students (non first year students) can work any shift. Transportation will be provided from the Linden Circle to the Marketplace at Steamtown from 1:30-4:00pm for students.
A note to Staff- Even more importantly, we need help with donations! Last year close to 1000 individuals attended this event. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if each and every child received a backpack full of school supplies? Monetary donations have turned out to be the best option for backpacks, because then we can be consistent in what every child receives; however donations of university swag/office supplies will gladly be accepted.
