LECTURE 1: Andrew Jackson, the Constitution and the Presidency

9:30 a.m to 10:45 a.m.
Since January 2017 when President Trump placed a portrait of Andrew Jackson in the Oval
Office, his supporters lavished praise on our seventh president while Trump detractors
defamed him. How accurate are either of these portrayals? The talk will examine how
Jackson approached the presidency and the Constitution and consider what it means for a
21st century president to appropriate his legacy.
Adam Pratt, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History, The University of Scranton

LECTURE 1: The Constitution in the Headlines
11:00 a.m to 12:15 p.m.
It is not always that our precious document makes the news. But in these tumultuous times, constitutional matters are making news almost every day. Professor Amar will address the most pressing constitutional issues making the news at the time of the lecture.
Akhil Amar, Ph.D., Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science, Yale University

LECTURE 3: The President vs. The First Amendment
1:45 p.m to 3:00 p.m.
The talk will explore the intentional continuous campaign of inflammatory distortion,
denunciation, diatribe and hate-mongering by the 45th president of the United States
against our news media; and what and why we can do about this unprecedented assault on
the Constitution.
Kevin Klose, President Emeritus of National Public Radio, former Dean of the College of
Journalism, University of Maryland

LECTURE 4: The Highs and Lows of Crime and Justice in the US: Reforming the Practice of Criminal Justice
3:15 p.m to 4:45 p.m.
Many US cities are experiencing their all-time low crime rates. High imprisonment rates,
‘get-tough’ policies and increasing police patrols are a few reasons scholars posit to explain
the reduction. This lecture gives an overview of recent reforms and offers an analysis of how today’s unique political context will affect future criminal justice practice.
Michael Jenkins, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Sociology/Criminal Justice
