Greater Scranton MLK Celebration Dinner

Sunday, 24 February, 2019

The Office of Equity and Diversity, along with the Greater Scranton MLK Commission, is pleased to once again co-host  the annual community celebration and awards dinner on February 24, 2019 in the McIlhenny Ballroom, from 1:00pm - 4:30pm.

The theme for 2019 is The MARCH continues: A New Era in Peaceful Activism. Our focus is to highlight Dr. King’s principle of facilitating cultural and legislative change using non-violent means - a message that seems to have been lost on many as we witness the violent protest incidents in our country. However, we also see evidence of how powerful peaceful protest can be when national discussions stem from players kneeling during our national anthem, or thousands gather at the Capitol to march in solidarity, or a single woman utters “me too”.

The Commission is excited to welcome Andrew Aydin, creator, co-author of the March graphic novel trilogy, Coretta Scott King Book Award Author Winner (2014, 2017), and digital media advisor to U.S. Congressman John Lewis, and featured guest speaker Joel B. Kemp, Ph.D., Harvard Law graduate, attorney and assistant professor of Theology and Religious Studies at The University of Scranton. For fuoll speaker biographies, please visit http://www.scranton.edu/equity-diversity/mlkcommission.shtml

Copies of the graphic novel, March, will be available for sale and signing by Mr. Aydin after the dinner.

Tickets are $25 each, $200 per table of 8, and may be purchased at http://www.safdn.org/mlk-event/  Limited seating is available. Contact Jennifer Pennington at 570-941-6645 or jennifer.pennington@scranton.edu for more informaiton.
