Celebrate Black History Month at Rutgers

The Office of Equity and Diversity is pleased to invite all University members to celebrate Black History Month by joining us for the 32nd annual Marion Thompson Wright Lecture Series on February 18, 2012 at Rutgers University. OED will sponsor a bus trip which is free for all University members. The theme for this year’s one-day conference is Taking Good Care: A History of Health and Wellness in the Black Community. Featured keynote speaker is former Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders who will present Health Disparities in Black America. Dr. Elders served as Surgeon General of the United States during the Clinton administration in 1993-1994.
Dr. William Owen will follow with comments and lecture: My Genetic Code or my Zip Code: Which Is More Important?

Dr. Sharla Fett, associate professor of History, Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA, to present: You Just Had to Depend on Yourself’: Self-Reliance and the Healing Work of Enslaved Women on U.S. Antebellum Plantations
Dr. Dorothy Roberts, Kirkland & Ellis Professor, Northwestern University School of Law, Chicago, Il, to present: Fatal Invention: The New Biopolitics of Race and Health
This conference is of special interest to students and faculty in Nursing, Pre-Med, OT/PT and Health Administration. The bus will leave from the area in front of St. Thomas Hall at 6:30AM. Reservations for this trip can be made by contacting OED at diversity@scranton.edu or call 570-941-6645. A $20 deposit is required at the time of reservation. This deposit will be refunded upon boarding the bus for departure from Scranton. Any unclaimed deposits will be donated to the University United Way campaign.
