Education for Justice Film Series: Taking the Heat

Tuesday, 17 April, 2012

"Taking the Heat" documents the history of women firefighters in the FDNY. It begins in 1977, with equality laws mandating the City lift the bar on women in fire department and the department’s response of developing a test impossible for women to pass and proven to have little to do with the work firefighters actually perform. Brenda Berkman sued the department on behalf of all women applicants and won, forcing the FDNY to change its exam process. Once in the FDNY, these women faced harassment and discrimination that was criminal, including equipment tampering and sexual abuse. Capt. Berkman, with over 20 years of service in the FDNY, continues to fight for women’s rights on the job.
