Bioethics Lecture - Are Quality of Life Judgments Ethical
Monday, 02 December, 2024
Many regard determinations of a patient's "quality of life" to be an important factor in ethical decisions related to end-of-life medical care as well as the distribution of scarce medical resources. But to what extent are these determinations themselves the result of prior ethical conclusions about what makes a human life good, or even worth living? Do our current methods for determining "quality of life" say anything about our ethical values and priorities? And if so, how might these judgments impact the most vulnerable and marginalized among us?
Dr. Gina Noia is Assistant Professor of Theology at Providence College in Providence, RI. An alumna of the University of Scranton (class of 2010), she went on to receive a PhD in Theology and Health Care Ethics from Saint Louis University. In addition to her academic appointments, she has worked as a clinical ethicist for multiple hospital systems. Her published scholarship may be found in journals such as Christian Bioethics and the Journal of Moral Theology.
