Slattery Center Lecture - Culture and Conflict-New England, Old England, and the Civil War, presented by Len Gougeon, PhD

Wednesday, 19 February, 2025

This presentation tells for the first time the story of a bitter cultural and political conflict that arose between the major writers and intellectuals of Great Britain and the United States during the Civil War. While it involved many issues early on, the argument eventually focused on one: the viability of liberal democracy and the notion that “all men are created equal.” Eventually, the conflict ignited a global crusade for racial equality and human rights that still reverberates today.
