Ethics in Emerging Technology Colloquium - Artificial Autonomy

Thursday, 24 April, 2025

Dr. Joe Cruz, Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science will present on some ethical issues related to artificial intelligence. Talk description: The advent of artificial intelligence raises some of the deepest ethical issues we can conceive. How should human-created thinking machines - trained on distributed collective knowledge and opaquely encoding both our insights and biases - be deployed and used? Will they remain mere tools, or will they evolve into autonomous forms of intelligence? Does AI hold the solution to global human problems, or will it be misaligned with human values, posing an existential threat? In this talk, I propose that the potential autonomy of artificial intelligences lies at the heart of the ethical challenges we face. The possibility that AIs will develop their own goals, wills, and agency introduces a pressing imperative for moral reflection.
