Jewish American Short Stories
Wednesdays: Feb. 19, 26, March 5, 12, 26 and April 2
Jewish-American writers have used the short story form since at least the 1940s to negotiate how they sit on both sides of the hyphen as Jews and Americans. In this class, we will run through a more or less chronological survey of some of the highlights of that tradition, reading three or four stories for each class. We begin with Delmore Schwartz and a handful of others who came of age before World War II, and then we move on through each of the following generations through to Nathan Englander and other young writers of today.
