COMING TO TERMS WITH THE PAST - THE COLOMBIAN FIGHT FOR JUSTICE

Thursday, 24 April, 2025

Visiting Scholar Dr. Farid Benavides will present a talk on the Colombian Fight for Justice. As a result of the Final Peace Agreement (AFP) with the FARC-EP, the Comprehensive Peace System (SIP) was created, made up of the Search Unit for Missing Persons (UBPD), the Truth Commission (CEV) and the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP). The latter is part of the justice component of the AFP and its purpose is to investigate and judge those most responsible for the most serious and representative crimes. The investigation strategy has led to the opening of 11 macro cases, which has allowed the truth to be established about the worst crimes of the Colombian conflict. The model applied is one of restorative justice, which aims to reestablish broken ties in society and the reintegration of the perpetrators into society as subjects with full access to their rights and, at the same time, repair the damage caused to the victims and allow them to recover their life project. This talk seeks to show the challenges and achievements of the JEP and the scope and limits of the Colombian model of transitional justice. [April 24th, 5:00 p.m., DeNaples 405]
